Live Coverage

Gary Brown suggested experimenting with live coverage at the next conference, I wanted to share my and his views.

Gary suggested...

Having one or more presenters do it live over the Internet with the ability for attendees who are signed on at that particular time to ask live questions and get live answers. Another option might be to have some of those not immediately available in the UK to do their presentation on video and have it broadcast over the Internet with an immediate follow-up discussion with the presenter in a chat room on the Internet.

You might want to experiment with a live presentation at the next graphology conference you attend over there in Europe.

In any event, and even if you don't want to try that yet, I think it would be terrific to have live chat with each author.

Nigel's Reply

These ideas are appealing, one big obstacle is the time difference. I write this message at 7am when America is sleeping. When you (in the USA) wake it will be lunchtime here and in India much later. Not impossible to do, but there is only a small window.

Indeed I did set up the facility on yahoo..

English        French        Italian        German        Spanish        Portugues

Just go to CHAT, you need to agree to have the yahoo chat software on your
PC. See what you think, I suggest you visit the chat rooms exactly on the half hour
to see if anyone is there (eg 12.00 or 12.30 etc)

One "golden window" is...

India 7pm-8pm

New York 8.30am-9.30am

London 13.30-14.30

If you want to know the time elsewhere in the world see the WORLD CLOCK

I am interested in the experiment and I think that the author availability is perfect. While I'm here I'd like to thank everyone for the praise, which I accept happily (a great motivator!) but I would like to highlight the fact that the idea of the virtual conference was proposed by Gary Brown and Anna Koren, Anna was almost there with a call for papers, and Gary broke the ice by airing his ideas and establishing his email community.

I would also repeat that I hope the concept will be applied to real conferences whereby papers presented physically are simultaneously launched as web pages. Please consider this if you organise a conference.

I think we are all keen on sharing knowledge and the net offers a free means. I challenge the notion that money should change hands everytime someone has something to say.

Have a good day
